Ballet 5:8 Studio Company
Ballet 5:8's Studio Company, together with the Conservatory, Men's and Trainee programs, provides dancers with exceptional classical ballet training, substantial performance experience, and national recognition through affiliate programs such as Regional Dance America.
Members of the audition-only Ballet 5:8 Studio Company receive training in Ballet 5:8's Vaganova and Balanchine infused technique, with an emphasis on developing comprehensive technical proficiency, dynamic musicality, and authentic artistry.
The mission of Ballet 5:8 is to engage audiences in Chicago, the Midwest, and the nation in conversation of life and faith through innovative storytelling and breathtaking dance. Ballet 5:8 Studio Company members experience and take part in this mission firsthand, performing original Ballet 5:8 repertoire in a variety of traditional and non-traditional settings. As Studio Company dancers perform throughout the season with Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts, the Ballet 5:8 professional company, and at events like Regional Dance America, they develop agility, consistency and artistry in addition to technique. Dancers also gain insight into the life of professional dancer through the rigorous class, rehearsal and performance schedule of the Studio Company.
Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts Productions
Studio Company dancers are cast in corps, soloist and principal roles in Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts two annual full-length productions: Beyond the Nutcracker in December, and a rotating full length ballet each spring. Studio Company dancers typically perform multiple roles in these performances and gain extensive experience in all aspects of performing in full-length works. Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts' full-length ballets are attended by more than 2,100 audience members from across the Chicagoland area each year.
Ballet 5:8 Professional Performances
Senior Studio Company members have the opportunity to vie for some roles in Ballet 5:8 professional performances. Dancers cast in these roles have the privilege of attending selected rehearsals with the Ballet 5:8 professional company, and performing with Ballet 5:8 in venues such as the Athenaeum Theatre in Chicago.
Regional Dance America
The Ballet 5:8 Studio Company is a proud member of Regional Dance America, a national association of dance companies in the United States and Canada. As members of RDA, Studio Company dancers have the opportunity to attend and perform at RDA regional and national conferences each year, where they participate in master classes by renowned figures from throughout the professional dance world. During the festivals, thousands of dollars in scholarships are awarded to dancers for study at prestigious summer programs and the National Choreography Intensive. Major professional companies, colleges and universities also scout for their future talent at the festivals. At the 2018 festival, the Ballet 5:8 Studio Company received the honor of being selected to perform Ballet 5:8 repertoire in three different festival performances.
Studio Company members also have the opportunity to perform in a variety of nontraditional or "outreach" settings. These performances take place at local public events, at dance events such as Dance Chicago’s DANCE SLAM, and occasionally even in schools, churches or nursing homes. Outreach performances are a special opportunity for Studio Company members to interact with the community in the greater Chicago area, to take Ballet 5:8's mission to new places, and at times, to share the joy of dance with those who may not be familiar with it or who may not have the resources to afford a performance ticket.
Studio Company membership is conditional upon participation in the Conservatory, Men's or Ballet 5:8 Trainee programs. Dancers should follow the audition guidelines for those programs in order to apply.
