Making Pointe Shoes Last

It is so exciting to be able to dance in pointe shoes, but I think we can all agree that they are way too expensive!

Because they die so quickly, it feels like you are constantly having to purchase new shoes and that can get very frustrating. There are tips and tricks to learn so that you can get the most life out of each pair of pointe shoes.

Multiple Pairs

First, have multiple pairs of shoes to rotate through each week. This is especially important for dancers wearing their shoes 3+ times per week or for more than two hours at a time.  Labeling your shoes helps keep them separated in pairs. If you wear one pair on Monday, make sure you wear a different pair on Tuesday, allowing each pair a day to dry in between uses. This will help your shoes last a little bit longer than they usually would.

Overnight Storage

When you are done wearing your shoes for the day, take all the padding out and place them somewhere to dry. NEVER leave your toe pads in your shoes when you are done dancing. The sweat will keep your shoes wet causing the glue inside the box to break down. Also, take your shoes out of your bag each night. You want to make sure they are able to completely air out. If they stay in your bag, it is possible that they could still be sweaty the next day.

Re-Harden

Finally, Jet Glue will be your pointe shoe’s best friend! You can coat the inside of the box with the glue. This will add another layer of strength to the shoe, allowing you to get more use before it dies. By taking proper care of your pointe shoes, you can extend the life of each pair that you wear, saving a ton of money in the end!
