A Holiday Story Inspired by the Classic Ballet

Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts invites you to come on an incredible holiday journey set to Tchaikovsky’s renowned Nutcracker score this December! Our full length Beyond the Nutcracker includes a cast of over 100 dancers, stunning choreography by Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director Julianna Slager, dazzling handmade costumes, and all of the magic of the traditional Nutcracker ballet - but with a new story that invites audiences to join Emma on a once-in-a-lifetime Christmas adventure.

It is my goal, in each of my works, to bring something to the audience that causes them to see a familiar story or thought from a new perspective.
— Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director Julianna Slager

Why a new twist on The Nutcracker?

Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director’s inspiration for the new ballet grew out of Ballet 5:8’s larger mission to actively engage with the depth and beauty of the art form of dance, but from a perspective that sees ballet as more than simply a form of enjoyment or as a means for passive entertainment. The storyline for Beyond the Nutcracker incorporates many  of the characteristic elements found in the original story as a nod to the classic work. Nonetheless, the heart of the new ballet is to give audiences a taste of the beauty and magic of the timeless holiday tradition while sharing an enchanting story that challenges us to reflect on the meaning of Christmas.
