— Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director Julianna Slager

Why a new twist on The Nutcracker?

Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director’s inspiration for the new ballet grew out of Ballet 5:8’s larger mission to actively engage with the depth and beauty of the art form of dance, but also with innovative storytelling that can engage audiences in conversation of life and faith. The storyline for Beyond the Nutcracker incorporates many  of the characteristic elements found in the original story as a nod to the classic work. Beyond the Nutcracker provides a taste of the beauty and magic of the timeless holiday tradition while also sharing an enchanting story that invites us to reflect on the story of the first Christmas.

Beyond the Nutcracker

The story of Beyond the Nutcracker begins on a cold Christmas Eve in the 1940's, at the home of the Cooper Family. After weeks of preparations, the Cooper's are finally ready for their annual Christmas party.

The Christmas party goes on through the evening, just as planned, until Uncle Abrahms opens a big, old book and begins to read a story about a Christmas from of old. After a dream - or was it real? - Emma meets the angel Anastasis and is invited on a magical journey where she sees the difference the first Christmas has made all across the world.
