A Parent’s Guide to Show Weekend with Young Kids

For Families with Young Dancers (Ages 3–10)

Show weekend is an exciting time full of anticipation, joy, and a little bit of backstage hustle. Here’s everything you need to know to help your young dancer shine while keeping stress low for the whole family.

1. What to Expect

  • Dress Rehearsal: This is typically held the day before or morning of the show. It helps the dancers practice in costume, on stage, and with lights. It is required.

  • Call Time: This is when your dancer needs to arrive backstage, usually 60–90 minutes before showtime. Come with hair and makeup done.

  • Performance: Show length varies but usually runs 90-120 minutes. Some young classes perform only in Act I—check your show info.

2. What to Pack

Use a labeled bag or small suitcase and pack:

  • Wear your leotard and tights!

  • Pack extra tights

  • Ballet shoes

  • Water bottle (no juice or sticky drinks)

  • Light, non-messy snack (crackers, string cheese, etc.)

  • Quiet activity (coloring book, small toy)

  • Hair supplies: brush, bobby pins, hairspray

  • Cover-up robe or zip-up hoodie to wear over costume

  • Pro-tip - Use setting spray to help keep your little one’s show make-up in place and looking fresh!

3. Backstage Tips

  • Drop-Off: You will sign your dancer in at the Preparatory Program table by the backstage entrance and leave them with the assigned chaperone or teacher. No parents are allowed backstage unless you are a volunteer.

  • Pick-Up: After the show (or your child’s portion), go to the Preparatory Program table to pick up your child. Children will be released one at a time for safety. Make sure to bring your ID.

4. Showtime Etiquette

  • Audience Behavior: Clapping, cheering, and joy are welcome! Please avoid flash photography and silence your phone.

  • Little Siblings: Consider bringing quiet toys or snacks to keep younger siblings content. Aisle seats are ideal in case you need a quick exit.

  • Celebrate! Flowers, cards, or a small treat after the show make your dancer feel proud and loved.

5. Encouragement Over Perfection

Remind your dancer that the goal is joyful participation, not perfection. Sometimes tights get twisted or steps are missed—and that’s okay. Show weekend is about building confidence, teamwork, and love for the stage.

Final Tip:

Be early, stay flexible, and encourage lots of rest and hydration throughout the weekend. With a little preparation and a lot of heart, it will be a weekend your dancer never forgets!
