Meet the Choreographer | Kaleigh, Ballet 5:8 Trainee
Ballet 5:8’s Studio Company will present its First Annual Student Produced Showcase, Emanate: An Arising Artist Showcase on Friday, October 15th at 6:15 PM CST. For this production, members of the Studio Company are taking on all production roles by choreographing and performing in the pieces, marketing the show, lighting and costuming the works, acting as stage manager and stage hands, and carrying out front of house responsibilities.
Ballet 5:8 Trainee Kaleigh Meeks is one of the four student choreographers, and will be premiering her contemporary ballet piece, Passing By… in the showcase. Kaleigh “caught the choreography bug” in college, and has been working on expanding her choreography portfolio ever since! Her favorite part of the choreographic process is finding the inspiration for a new work.
Typically, Kaleigh plans out all of her choreography before rehearsals with her dancers, but for this piece, she has taken a more improvisational path, choreographing the piece mostly during the rehearsals with the dancers. She has enjoyed seeing the choreography unfold and morph in front of her during these creative rehearsals. Passing By… explores the relationships of people passing by each other in their everyday lives, and how these seemingly insignificant connections can have a palpable impact on the lives of those involved.
Come see Kaleigh’s work, along with works by three other student choreographers and three professional choreographers, in-person or via livestream on Friday, October 15th at 6:15 PM CST!
