Sophia Snider | Beyond the Nutcracker Character Interviews

It’s time to celebrate our Fifth Anniversary performances Beyond the Nutcracker this December! Ballet 5:8’s twist on the holiday classic leads to story of the very first Christmas and takes us on a journey around the world as we see impact of the birth of Jesus in every culture. We’ve asked a few of the Studio Company and Guest Artist dancers featured in the performance to share about their role and what they enjoy most about dancing in this joy-filled ballet.

Q. What is your name, age and city of residence?

A. My name is Sophia Snider and I am currently 17 years old. I live in New Lenox, IL. and this will be my fourth year dancing with Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts' Conservatory Program.

Q. What is your role in Beyond the Nutcracker?

A. This is my fifth time performing in Beyond the Nutcracker and I will be playing the character Anastasis this year. Anastasis is an angel who guides Emma Cooper and Uncle Abrahms on their journey to discover what makes Christmas meaningful and a joyful time of year, the birth of Jesus Christ!

Q. What do you enjoy about this role?

A. I enjoy dancing as Anastasis because she is such a joyful character who mysteriously appears during the ballet to help orchestrate the storyline. Every time I step into character, I am reminded of the constant source of hope we have in Jesus. Also, this role challenges me! The choreography itself is very classical which requires a great deal of stamina. I feel the growth in my artistry and technique as I am pushed daily to make the movement look as effortless and as "floaty" as possible!

I would strongly encourage people of all ages to come and see Beyond the Nutcracker. This ballet is very uplifting and is full of genuine Christmas spirit! The costumes, the music, the choreography, and the story line help to illustrate the beautiful hope that we can experience at any point throughout the year, not only at Christmastime.
