Eva Sernas | Beyond the Nutcracker Character Interview

It’s time to celebrate our Fifth Anniversary performances Beyond the Nutcracker this December! Ballet 5:8’s twist on the holiday classic leads to story of the very first Christmas and takes us on a journey around the world as we see impact of the birth of Jesus in every culture. We’ve asked a few of the Studio Company and Guest Artist dancers featured in the performance to share about their role and what they enjoy most about dancing in this joy-filled ballet.

Q. What is your name, age and city of residence?

A. My name is Eva Sernas. I am 15 and I live in the city of Homewood, Illinois.

Q. What is your role in Beyond the Nutcracker?

A. I am dancing the role of the Russian queen/ Russian Soloist! In our rendition of The Nutcracker, she is the queen of her country and is full of joy and light. I’m so excited to perform this! I get to dance with a lovely corps de ballet. The corps is made up of several stunning dancers, all of whom I love so much! The happiness and energy that is present during this dance is something that makes me so happy. I adore all of Beyond the Nutcracker, but this dance has a very special place in my heart.

Q. What do you enjoy most about this role?

A. I enjoy the music, steps, and costume…I guess that means I love it all! More specifically, I really enjoy how hard it is. There are several jumps and turns in this piece, which are challenging for me. Working on this role, has really pushed me, and while it will never be perfect, it’s so exciting to see growth in things I never thought I could do. I also adore the music!! I remember watching George Balanchine’s Nutcracker years ago, and being so in love with the lead dancer’s musicality and presence on stage. I hope that I will be able to accomplish even just the slightest bit of that one day.
