Conservatory Program

This intensive program equips serious students of classical ballet to progress to positions in Trainee Programs with Ballet 5:8 and other professional companies, and to pursue careers in many areas within the wider field of dance if they wish, including professional performance, teaching, and choreography.

Overview

The Conservatory program takes dancers through the most advanced, technically-challenging levels of our Vaganova-style syllabus with training in classical ballet technique, pointe, classical variations, Ballet 5:8 repertoire, and partnering. Progressing Ballet Technique, Yoga and Pilates provide the cross-training needed to sustain the physical demands of advanced classical ballet. Additional supplementary classes such as Graham modern, jazz, contemporary, Flamenco and improv shape a versatile, well-rounded dancer.

Typically attended by dancers ages 14 and older, the Conservatory includes up to 25 hours per week of training, Monday-Friday. Classes begin as early as 2:15pm, promoting the optimal physical and mental progression of the advanced dancer.* A wealth of performing opportunities in a variety of settings allow students to master important skills related to navigating the rehearsal and performance process and to develop artistry along with their technqiue.

Our dedicated team of instructors are current or former professional dancers, bringing a wealth of experience to the classroom. Moreover, as we challenge each dancer to reach their fullest potential, their physical and emotional health is always a priority. We boast a family-like atmosphere with small class sizes to promote individual attention for each student. We believe in the importance of maintaining open lines of communication between students, their families and our staff and all times. Our staff and dedicated program directors are always a call or an email away and is happy to set up a meeting anytime.

Performing Opportunities

Students in Ballet IIIB technique with Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director Julianna Slager

Conservatory Program students participate in the Ballet 5:8 Studio Company and take advantage of a wide range of performing opportunities.

The Studio Company is a very unique aspect of Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts in that it allows dancers to perform throughout the school year and at times, interact with Ballet 5:8 Trainees and the professional company. Studio Company dancers:

  • Are cast in corps de ballet, soloist and even lead roles in Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts' full-length original ballets including Beyond the Nutcracker.
  • Can vie for corps de ballet and supporting roles in some Ballet 5:8 professional productions.
  • Perform in a variety of events across the Chicagoland area, including Dance Chicago's "Dance Slam" and local events in the Chicago South Suburbs.
  • Perform in outreach settings such as in schools and nursing/retirement communities.
  • Attend Regional Dance America and vie for performance opportunities at the festival.

We believe that performing in both theater and outreach settings are crucial aspects of a dancer’s training toward being a well-rounded dancer as well as an ambassador for Christ in any situation. The Ballet 5:8 Studio Company teaches crucial skills specific to choreography, rehearsal and performance and challenges dancers use their craft as a way to share beauty, joy and meaningful stories with audiences in a way that looks "out instead of in."

Regional Dance America

The Pre-Professional & Conservatory Programs are also a proud member of Regional Dance America MidStates.

Regional Dance America is a National Association of Dance Companies fostering the growth and education of dancers, choreographers, directors and dance companies in every community across the United States and Canada. Ballet 5:8 Studio Company dancers have the opportunity to attend and perform at the RDA the regional and national conferences each year - read more
